Overview
The IT industry is full of different job titles, many of which all apply to the same type of job! Each of these roles requires different qualifications and skills so below we have put together some of the most common job titles and the certifications that will help you reach your goals.
Helpdesk Analyst
Helpdesk analysts are the backbone of any organisations IT support team with common tasks including:
- Managing incoming help requests from users over the telephone, e-mail and any other reporting mechanism the organisation uses.
- Refering more complex problems to an experienced technician.
- Recording, tracking and documenting the help desk problem-solving process, including all successful and unsuccessful actions through to final issue resolution.
- Identifying and learning appropriate software and hardware.
- Performing hands-on fixes at the desktop level, installing and upgrading software, installing hardware, implementing file backups and configurings systems and applications.
- Performing preventative maintenance, checking and cleaning of workstations, printers and peripherals.
- Evaluating documented resolutions and analysing trends to find ways to prevent future problems.

Server Engineer - Windows
Windows based servers make up the bulk of almost every companies server estate, as a server engineer you will be expected to:
- Carry out regular checks on the status of servers from a hardware and software standpoint.
- Manage the data backup of servers through the checking of nightly backup logs and the carrying out of file restores as requested by users.
- Handle escalation support from Desktop Services and branch IT teams for desktop and server related issues. This will include answering the team hotline, responding to emails sent to the team or the individual and responding to requests.
- Completing service requests from customers in the form of change requests, data requests and commisioning new servers.
- Regular maintenance of Windows servers through the installation of software upgrades, patches, hardware upgrades.
- Vendor management / supervision for the installation and maintenance of servers.

Server Engineer - Linux/UNIX
In addition to Windows servers many organisations use Linux or UNIX based servers for specific roles. Whilst the responsibilities are similar to those of a Windows administrator a different skill set is required. Job responsibilities include:

Database Administrator
Almost every organisation will leverage a database for some purpose. Many will use several accross multiple applications and as a database administrator they will be your responsibility. In this role you will be responsible for:
- Administering, maintaining, enhancing and supporting the database production and/or development environment. This includes day-to-day object management of any or all of the following: users, tables, indexes, synonyms, procedures, packages, triggers, views, database links, sequences and functions.
- Providing performance monitoring/regular monitoring of the database.
- Ensureing database integrity and undertaking performance tuning, indexing, segmentation and database recovery.
- Providing on-site and remote support - second and third level support.
- Looking at the performance and scalability of a database.

Security Administrator
Security is essential to any company. As a security administrator you are responsible for protecting your organisation from the multitude of threats that are out there! In this role you will be responsible for:
- Overseeing security systems for the identification and mitigation of IT threats.
- Assisting with the design and development of key risk indicators and risk reporting formats.
- Gathering and defining business requirements and processing for an assigned project through conducting meetings with business users.
- Understanding encryption, certification and key management.
- Analysing process flows, developing use cases, validating and documenting research findings for management review. Creating a repository for requirements documents.
- Implementation and management of security systems.
Common certifications for this role include:
Network Engineer
Network engineers are responsible for maintaining the routing and switching on top of which the rest of the organisations IT runs. In this role you will perform tasks such as:
- Configuring, testing, and maintaining LAN/WAN equipments and related services
- Identifying, diagnosing, and resolving network problems
- Creating and maintaining comprehensive documentation for all implemented networks
- Maintaining and supporting the company’s LAN/WAN environment and authentication administration
- Daily maintenance and problem resolution, operating system patches and software upgrades, and routine hardware configuration
