The Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA) 2003 certification is geared toward the IT professional responsible for administration and management of a Microsoft Windows network or networking services.

Summary of this certification (description found below this summary)

This certification encompasses the client and server 2003 operating system as well as a more thorough understanding of networking services like DNS, DHCP, Web servers and more. More Microsoft specific services like Active Directory and Group Policies are covered, including use of utilities and management tools to ensure all-round management and understanding of a Windows network.

Exams/ course modules are broken down into 3 major categories, Core examinations, Elective examinations and Upgrade examinations. Below is a description of each.

Core exams/ modules: These are the course modules that are mandatory and required by Microsoft for the MCSA. These must be taken in order to achieve the correct foundations and certifications.

Elective exams/ modules: Seen as the 'subject with an option', Microsoft have provided an array of subjects to select from in order to complete your MCSA. This allows the delegate to further their skills into the field of their choice.

Upgrade exam/ module: Microsoft has designed an upgrade path that will allow an existing MCSA on Windows 2000 to earn the Windows Server 2003 credential in a financially economic and effective approach.

The MCSA is a collection of 4 Microsoft Exams - 3 Core, 1 elective = 4 weeks training or 1 upgrade. The electives can be one of the Microsoft electives mentioned below, or CompTIA A+ and NET+ can be combined as one elective, or CompTIA Security+ can be used as an elective.
