Solaris Administration Part 1

Prerequisites
Students should have industry experience and an introduction level knowledge of Solaris or Unix systems.
Understanding Shell programming and previous administration experience is beneficial.

  • Introduction to the Solaris system - Components of the Solaris operating environment, Roles of the administrator, Key terminology
  • Administering the boot prom - Use the OpenBoot PROM commands to identify system configuration, change the boot device and perform basic hardwaretesting.
  • Managing packages - Investigate software packages on the system, Add new software packages, Remove software packages.
  • Managing Patches - Patch information, Patches installed on the system, adding and removing updates and patches.
  • Software installation - Understand Solaris software groups and install a system for a networked standalone installation.
  • Workstation booting- System boot cycle, Run levels, Run Control scripts, the init process, Commands to bring the system down, Modifying the boot process.
  • System Security - Access security, limiting root login, custom system files to investigate and control the access to system.
  • User Management- Administering groups, users & primary initialisation files.
  • Data Security - Advanced file permissions, setgid, setuid, sticky bit, set up access control lists
  • Process Control - Administering processes, Process scheduling.
  • Disk Slicing - Disk planning, Disk labels, Disk partitions.
  • Configuring Disks- Adding & identifying new hardware devices.
  • Creating and managing filesystems - Solaris file system, the fsck utility, Creating Unix Filesystem, Monitoring the file systems.
  • Mounting file systems - Mounting and Unmounting local Unix file systems, Using volume management with CDroms and floppy disks.
  • Backup and recovery concepts - Investigate backup strategies and concepts, review backup commands.
  • LP print servic - Set up a printer, Configure for remote and local printing, print commands to print and monitor the print requests.
